If your computer is showing symptoms with ageing-slowdown, system crashes or frequent errors-you need not get frustrated. What you are experiencing is something almost all PC users have to go through at some point or the other. Here are some very important tips that will help you improve the performance of your PC and greatly improve productivity for a long time to come.

Tip 1: Empty your Recycle Bin

Frequency: Once a Week

If you empty the Recycle Bin on a regular basis you will be able to free up a lot of precious hard disk space. This is because when you delete any file, your computer gives you another chance to restore a file, by storing it in Recycle Bin. In order to empty the bin, you need to right-click on the icon of Recycle Bin on Desktop and select the option that says Empty Recycle Bin.

Tip 2: Clean and Defragment your Hard Disk

Frequency: Once a Month

Your hard disk can get up filled with unnecessary files pretty quickly. A computer with unclean and cluttered hard drive may slow down to a snail's speed and may also become vulnerable to various errors. Your Windows operating system offers two great utilities that help you cleanup and defragment the hard disk in just few minutes. These two tools are:

a) Disk Cleanup: Eliminates redundant files like Temporary Internet files, Log files and so on.

b) Disk Defragmenter: It reorganizes the contents of your hard drive in a contiguous manner.

These two tools can be accessed through System Tools in your Windows Start menu.

Tip 3: Remove Unwanted Programs

Frequency: Once in 3 months

It is very easy to install new programs and applications but it has been often observed that these programs continue to stay on your computer, long after they have served their purpose. Such programs eat up a lot of system resources and may interfere with the normal functioning of other programs.

You can make use of a built-in tool known as Add/Remove Programs to get rid of the programs you no longer need. This tool is available in the Control Panel. When you open this tool, you will be able to see all the programs that are installed in your system. You can select the ones you want to delete and simply follow the instructions.

Tip 4: Scan your Computer for Malware

Frequency: Once a week

One of the main reasons that cause computer to freeze, slow down or even crash lies in malicious software or malware. Malware includes any kind of virus or spy software that enters your PC with the intent of causing damage to your system or to steal important information.

It is therefore recommended that you do not operate your system without installing reliable anti-virus and anti-spyware software. In addition to this, you must also perform a thorough and complete scan of your computer to eliminate any malicious software that may have crept in.
