There are so many suggestions and recommendations floating on the Internet that no one seems to be sure which ones are the quickest and easiest ways to speed up a slow computer. Some of these suggestions are only for technologically forward users and not every one can implement them on their own.

So in this article, we are going to talk about only the methods that can help any amateur user speed up his computer in a few minutes:

Service your Hard Disk:

It sounds unbelievable but could very well be true that a hard with large disk space can get filled up so fast that it could be gasping for breath. The fact is a lot of this space is occupied by the files that you do not need, like:

a) Deleted files lying your Recycle Bin

b) Temporary files that are downloaded when you browse the Internet

c) Optional components of Windows that are not in use

d) Other redundant program files

You can get rid of all these files with the help of a built-in system tool known as Disk Cleanup. To run this tool, you simply have to open the System Tools option in the Accessories section of the Windows Start menu and click on Disk Cleanup.

Just below the Disk Cleanup option, you will find another fantastic tool that sets your hard disk in order. The tool is Disk Defragmenter and it organizes all the files to make their access faster. You can use both these tools regularly and keep your computer working like new.

Get rid of redundant programs:

It is easy to ignore or even forget about a lot of programs that are not in use for a long time. Some of these applications may have come bundled when you bought the PC or may have been downloaded for use in the past. It is critical that you remove these obsolete programs as they continue to fight with other programs for system resources and slow it down.

There is a very simple way to do this that will not enable you to both analyze if you need the program or not and how much space it occupies. The utility which helps you do this is Add or Remove Programs. You can launch the utility from Windows Control Panel.

Say NO to Malware:

Malware or malicious software is one of the greatest threats to your computer, especially if your system is connected to the Internet for long hours every day. If you find your computer becoming extremely slow, particularly when you are browsing the web, the reason could be spy software that is not only trying to monitor your internet use; it may also be trying to steal your private information. It could also be a virus that is slowing down your PC by damaging important files.

What you need is reliable anti-virus and anti-spyware software programs installed on your PC so that they can detect any malicious software that attempts to make an entry without your knowledge. You must also take out some, at least once a week, to run a thorough scan of your system using these tools.
